Thoroughbred Safety Coalition Supports Passage of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act
The Thoroughbred Safety Coalition fully supports the bipartisan Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) introduced today by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Martha McSally (R-AZ). Our founding mission has been to advocate for the implementation of uniform rules and reforms that enhance Thoroughbred safety and the integrity of our sport, and this bill does exactly that. By creating an independent governing authority to oversee a synergistic and collaborative effort to make Thoroughbred racing a safer sport, HISA will modernize the industry through strengthened safety and accountability measures.
We acknowledge that there is more work to do, both in Congress and in the racing community, but this legislation represents a roadmap to a better, safer sport for all. Thanks to the unprecedented display of unity led by Leader McConnell, the Coalition Steering Committee and The Jockey Club, we are one step closer to replacing the current patchwork of regulations that vary across racing jurisdictions with consistent, transparent and enforceable rules.
With an expanded scope that includes additional medication restrictions, operational reforms and a racetrack safety program, the legislation introduced in the Senate builds on the extraordinary efforts of Horseracing Integrity Act sponsors Representatives Andy Barr (R-KY) and Paul Tonko (D-NY). The Thoroughbred Safety Coalition looks forward to collaborating with them to garner support for the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act.
